By Gillian Bleimann (Berje Inc.); Bea Hornedo (Bontoux, Inc.); Laure Moutet; and Erica Lermond McDonnell (The Lermond Company, LLC)

On April 14, 2015, the WFFC, together with International Fragrance Association North America (IFRA, NA), Research Institute For Fragrance Materials (RIFM) and The European Federation of Essential Oils (EFEO), hosted a seminar at Nanina’s in the Park, Belleville, NJ, discussing the regulation of natural products and the impact on our global industry. Gillian Bleimann welcomed attendees and highlighted the WFFC’s focus on education. Laure Moutet introduced the EFEO and explained EFEO’s role in bringing essential oils to the forefront of discussions with the European government and in developing NCS consortia for REACH. The seminar featured five speakers. Megan Ekstrom, IFRA, NA, focused on natural products & US legislation; she discussed the Global Harmonized System, California’s Proposition 65 & the EPA’s Green Labeling Program. EFEO’s Technical Committee Co-Chairmen, Jens-Achim Protzen, Paul Kaders (GmbH) and Eric Angelini (MANE), decoded REACH Legislation, updated attendees on essential oil registration through consortia and emphasized that the registration process for Phase III must start now. Dr. David Wilcox, President of RIFM, gave an overview of RIFM, updating the audience on safety assessments and RIFM’s approach to the evaluation of naturals. He explained that it has become clearer due to the adoption of the methodology of the threshold of toxicological concern. Jennifer Abril (IFRA, NA), closed the evening with an update on IFRA, NA. She emphasized the need for advocacy and proactive initiatives and highlighted IFRA, NA’s effort to combat the increased negative media attention on fragrance and the broader chemical industry.
