    Bell Flavors & Fragrances, Inc. seeks Savory Flavorist, for Chicago area headquarters.

    Summary:

    • Flavorist, Savory responsibilities will include creative flavor development and flavor matching, technical innovation, and customer engagement.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Experiments with natural and synthetic materials or byproducts to develop new flavors.
    • Flavorist will make and support Sales presentations to key customers.
    • Will work with Marketing Department, Chefs, and Savory Application Specialists to create customized presentations for major accounts.
    • Studies effect of flavors in various applications, including shelf life, stability test, flavor retention test etc., in various end applications.
    • Performs quality control testing on newly developed flavors and facilitates the generation of appropriate paperwork by QC and the Regulatory Departments.
    • Reviews materials & flavors for compliance with regulatory law in countries where Bell conducts business.
    • Must have an extensive knowledge of developing flavors for application in Savory products like meats, sauces, seasonings, etc.
    • Ability to create Savory top note flavors.
    • Ability to duplicate the full range of savory flavor forms.
    • Experience with reaction chemistry, including the working with the Paar reactor. 
    • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate recordkeeping on all projects assigned.
    • Utilizes good time management skills while working under pressure.
    • Follows all Federal, State, Lab, and local safety regulations in performing work requirements.

    Education, Training and/or Work Experience Requirements

    • Bachelor's degree (B. S.) from four-year College or university.
    • Six to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Membership in The Society of Flavor Chemists is required.

    OVERVIEW:

    A Group Leader within the Fragrance Team is responsible for managing all aspects of fragrance development for multiple brands in all geographic regions where the products will be sold. 

    This position will oversee all fragrance-related activities involved in the development and support of products for global application Evaluators (all levels) and/or technicians will assist in delivering multiple fragrance development projects and products to market.




    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Assure the group develops fragrances aligned with brand strategy
    • Lead the decisions on fragrances and/or fragrance technologies for consumer testing and eventual commercialization in order to achieve fragrance goals and add consumer value
    • Develop a vision for the future, outlining goals and plans to meet goals
    • Share R&D fragrance strategy, vision and fragrance performance to functional and cross-functional counterparts as well as higher management (regional and global)
    • Lead the group in performing in-depth consumer research to understand consumer awareness, fragrance preferences, emotional attributes and value from fragrance
    • Understand the fragrance direction/trends/consumer habits within beauty care categories and other categories as appropriate
    • Gather and utilize information from suppliers about the fragrance industry including fine fragrance, market situation, fragrance trends and consumer insights
    • Participate in staff development, including training, mentoring and career planning
    • Seek to improve the overall technical competency of the fragrance group and product development department in general by exploring new technologies, searching for new consumer trends and securing new products
    • Evaluate the performance of employees, providing feedback and working to raise the technical and performance standards
    • Set and arrange priorities in line with functional and departmental goals
    • Develop and nurture relationships across groups within Americas Research Lab R&D, cross-functionally and with the appropriate laboratories and groups within global Kao
    • Effectively communicate fragrance development status, issues and next steps for project initiatives across all functions
    • Attend or guide members to represent fragrance team to effectively communicate status, issues and next steps for projects
    • Provide support to Product Supply and Consumer Affairs on fragrance/odor related issues
    • Guide staff to create and maintain all of the necessary documentation in order to develop and commercialize products with the 'best' fragrance (i.e. lab notebooks, specifications, technical test methods/data, etc.)
    • Maintain up-to-date with safety regulations – comply with all global regulations (IFRA and RIFM) and take a proactive approach to modify fragrances as needed





    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • BS - science field (Chemistry, Biology, Engineering) or science-related
    • 10 years’ experience in product development with a focus on fragrance development
    • Technical fragrance expertise with a keen sense of smell and the ability to describe fragrances and odors
    • Domestic and international travel is required; the amount of travel is dependent on the brand and many other factors but would likely be less than 15% of time
    • Technical fragrance expertise, keen sense of smell, ability to describe fragrances and odors, knowledge of fragrance raw materials, base raw materials, interaction and stability of materials in various matrices
    • Highly collaborative, well organized, driven and self-motivated with a bright, eager, positive attitude. Independent thinking, technical passion & curiosity, creativity, fragrance category & consumer insight
    • Ability to work cross functionally with several different departments
    • Ability to influence the organization
    • Must effectively communicate with all organizational levels across all functions
    • Ability to lead technical direction and teamwork of their staff; ability to manage and motivate different levels of professional technical staff
    • Problem solving, the ability to handle multiple and changing priorities in a fast paced, dynamic organization
    • It will be key to build linkages outside Kao to include fragrance suppliers, professional fragrance associations (e.g, IFRA) and other key industry organizations

    Responsibilities:

    •  Independently review new and existing raw materials from legal and technical standpoint. Some support is provided by management to interpret customer and government regulations. This function requires knowledge of technical aspects of Raw Materials and US FDA Food/Flavor & State Regulations.
    • Specific documents include: Natural Certification, FDA Certification, FEMA-GRAS Certifications, Allergen, Food Grade Certifications, GMO Certification, BSE, Continuing Food Guarantee, Country of Origin Certifications, Customer Questionnaires, Nutritional, Organic, permissibility and other appropriate documents.
    • Gain SAP proficiency and support the Raw Materials and Formula Management department in daily tasks.

    Knowledge and Experience Requirements:

    • College degree (B.S.) in Food Science, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Nutrition or related fields.
    • 1 to 5 years of experience in the food or a similar manufacturing industry.
    • Robust analytical and critical thinking skills
    • 3-5 years SAP user experience, mid-level Power Point skills, advance level of Excel.
    • Knowledge of basic chemistry and mathematics essential. Proficient in computer knowledge, including database management, spreadsheet creation, and internet navigation skills, and scientific/technical writing skills.
