2013 Cincinnati - Olive Oils From Around The World

On November 20th, 2013, The WFFC Cincinnati Chapter hosted their fall “Olive Oils From Around The World” event at the Spicy Olive in Hyde Park, Ohio. Three local women own this family business, which offers a variety of fresh olive oils and fine balsamic vinegars, some of which are infused with unique flavors. During the networking hour guests sampled fresh olive oils from around the world.  This store not only shares their recipes on their website, but also invites guests to share new recipes that they develop using the company’s olive oils and vinegars.

Using a variety of oils and balsamic vinegars from Spicy Olive’s offerings, Chef Alfio of Alfios in Hyde Park, gave a cooking demonstration and prepared four excellent courses each paired with wine. The Fried Goat Cheese and Beet Salad was paired with a Toscano Bianco, which was grassy in aroma while the Butternut Squash Soup was paired with an Italian Pinot Nero, which was a sweet dry red with a buttery aroma that also pairs well with beef, seafood risotto and salmon.  The main course Braised Veal Short Rib Ravioli won the “Best Taste Award” in the Taste of Blue Ash and was paired with a Malbec Sottana Argentina that featured topnotes of raspberry and plum with a very smooth finish. To complete the delicious meal, Fig Gelato was served as  Chef Alfio explained the difference between gelato and ice cream. He explained that ice cream uses more cream than milk and gelato has less cream making it lower in fat.

The guests had a relaxing evening while learning about, sampling and purchasing different olive oils and vinegars from around the world.
